Masias, from textile to waste
Masias Group from Sant Joan les Fonts, manufactures machines for textile sector since 1941. After half a century of activity, Masias experienced the textile sector crisis in the Iberian peninsula.
Even though the production was being kept, the owners of this family business from La Garrotxa understood that they had to find out an alternative to this sales decrease. In 1991 they started manufacturing – under license – machines for the waste processing. That is how Masias Recycling Division was born and became one of the top companies in its sector.
Manufacturing of textile machines is being kept; nearly all this production is being exported. But, 80% of the turnover of Masias Group comes from environmental sector from plant engineering and equipment. And from those ones, sales abroad mean two thirds of total. There are some resemblances in between manufacturing textile machines and residues processing but, it was necessary to adapt workers to much more specialized processes. There are processes and spare parts that can be used for one machine or another. But, a continuous effort is need to innovate.

“In 18 years trajectory, beginnings were not easy logically, in fact, in any case things are easy. That is the reason why we are constantly innovating, looking for solutions. New valorization alternatives are being implanted, residues recovering, new systems. Obviously, if we have achieved this objective, we also want to be in the vanguard of these processes”.
Consolidation in the environmental sector gave Masias Company the possibility to open a new plant in Celrà – Girona, Spain – exclusively devoted to manufacturing waste processing equipment. Internationalization achieved with textile is being kept with that branch. Masias has set up two big plants in China and a third one is being finished. Also exports to France, Greece, Great Britain, Nigeria and Portugal, this last one being at present one of the countries that places more orders.
The systems are positioned in different types of residues. From here it comes out equipment for the treatment of solid urban residues, construction residues, organics residues and light containers. Also it produces special projects to treat industrial residues.
Most of the installations are installed abroad. There is one in Catalonia, in Vic (Barcelona) which is owned and operated for the company Urbaser, were at the present between 12.000 and 13.000 tones of light containers, paper and cardboard are processed.
The quality and innovation gave the chance to Masias Recycling to be a world leader. Also fits to emphasize the impulse, around the world, of the environment sector, that it is a good deal to the companies that notice in a relevant way more or less the crisis in their activity field.
